BTS Chairman Pushes 40-Baht Flat Fare, High-Speed Rail May Miss 2030, and Skytrax Crowns Singapore

A flat fare that could transform Bangkok commuting, a mega-project falling behind, and Singapore reminding everyone what a proper airport looks like.

40 Baht and Done

BTS Group's chairman has called for a fixed rail fare of about 40 baht per trip — roughly 1,000 baht a month — arguing it's an affordable way to draw commuters off the roads as fuel costs surge, according to Nation Thailand. The proposal is simple, populist, and would fundamentally change how Bangkok's middle class commutes.

Current BTS fares can reach 60+ baht for cross-city journeys, pricing out many daily commuters. A flat 40-baht fare would make rail competitive with bus and motorbike for the first time.

High-Speed Rail Hits Delays

The Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima high-speed rail section has reached only 52.4% completion, with persistent construction delays and unresolved contracts putting the 2030 launch target at risk, according to Nation Thailand. The project — Thailand's first high-speed rail link and a cornerstone of Thai-Chinese infrastructure cooperation — has been plagued by delays since inception.

Singapore Stays on Top

Skytrax named Singapore Changi Airport the world's best for 2026, with major Asian hubs dominating the top rankings, according to Nation Thailand. The gap between Changi and Bangkok's airports remains a sore point for Thai aviation ambitions.
